Poul Kjærholm

Poul Kjærholm (1929-1980) - furniture designer.

Kjærholm was first trained as a cabinet-maker before studying furniture design at the Copenhagen School for the Applied Arts (1949-1952). He then continued as a lecturer there (1956-1956). In 1955, he became a lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and in 1976 he became a professor there. Kjærholm's preferred line of work was furniture design, especially in steel and leather. His design is a mix of Scandinavian tradions, European modernism and the rational ideas of the Bauhaus school.

The details of the design are typical for his ideas. For long periods of time, Poul Kjærholm's furniture were exclusive and not very acessible to the general public.

Nowadays, he has been rediscovered and his furniture are very desired. His most well-know work is the leather sofa (1956), the PK 22 chair in woven cane or leather for Fritz Hansen A/S (1957), Frame Chair (PK15) (1965) manufacured by PP Møbler ApS (1991), Dining Chair (PK11) (1957) for Fritz Hansen A/S, Hammock Chair (PK-24) (1965). In 1976 Kjærholm designed a fold-up chair in woven maple for the Concert Hall of Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. Recipient of the Lunning award in 1958. Also on the international scene, Kjærholm is considered one the best furniture designers.
