Jørgen Gammelgaard

Jørgen Gammelgaard (1938-1991), furniture designer, was a trained cabinet maker from C B Hansen's Workshop, Copenhagen, in 1957 (awarded silver medal).

Journeyman cabint maker at A J Iversen, Copenhagen, (1957-1959). Visiting student at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of the Fine Arts (1962-1964). Employed at Arne Jacobsen's studio 1968-1969. Opened his own studio in 1973.

Appointed Professor to The Department of Furniture and Spatial Art, Danish Design Council, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1987. Gammelgaard's most well-known designs include silverware for Georg Jensen, fixtures for the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, Rødovre Library and IBM's headquarters in Lyngby, folding stool in steel and canvas for Design Forum, the Tip-Top Pendent and the VIP lamp series, Design Forum, crest rail chair and steel tube chair for Collection Schiang, EJ20 sofa for Erik Jørgensen. Awarded the Danish Furniture Prize (1971). Awarded the Annual Prize from both the Danish Council of Arts and Crafts and the Danish Design Council (1985/1986).
